Keeping Careful Watch

This past Saturday, walking along the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Randy and I noticed a young family walking towards us. They caught our eyes not because they had three young children, not because one of the children kept walking ahead, but because this young couple handled the child who ran ahead the same way we always have. They didn’t run after the child, they didn’t yell at her, they didn’t count. They simply stopped each time, watched their daughter, and waited for her to notice that she had walked too far ahead again.

This morning, as I read from 1 Peter 1, two phrases jumped out at me. In The Message translation, they say: “God the Father has his eye on each of us” and “he is keeping careful watch.” As I read them, I reflected again on how Randy and I have always handled our children when they walk ahead of us. We don’t embarrass ourselves by yelling, or chasing them, or making threats . . . we simply stop, wait, and observe the child begin to sense that our presence is no longer there. Then we keep our eyes on them as they run back to us.

Hmm . . . God does the same for us when we excitedly run ahead, doesn’t he? He quietly waits, keeps his eye on us, and observes as we begin to sense that his presence is no longer there. Finally, he keeps careful watch on us as we run back into his loving embrace.
